“Walk, Bike, & Roll” a Big Hit at Ashland

“Walk, Bike, & Roll” a Big Hit at Ashland

The Ashland Elementary community celebrated on the front lawn after a successful Walk, Bike, & Roll to School event that drew dozens of smiling families together on a bright spring morning.

“It created a lifetime memory full of a lot of joy,” said parent coordinator Griffin VanMeter. “The majority of us came to school together, and that’s so important when we’re building community.”

Students had gathered at a half-dozen locations in the neighborhood to walk or bike to campus in groups. Some rode scooters, and others donned roller blades! With staff and family members leading the way, the children felt a sense of camaraderie and security among their friends. Police officers directed traffic along the routes and around the school building.

The activity promoted eco-friendly commuting options that reduce vehicle congestion and carbon emissions, and it encouraged students to embrace cycling as a fun, healthy, and social activity.

Superintendent Demetrus Liggins rode his bike, too, and Mayor Linda Gorton praised Ashland for its community spirit. “This isn’t just a moment,” VanMeter added, “it’s a whole movement.”
