“PBIS” is short for Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports. PBIS is an evidence-based framework for developing positive behavior and is used in schools nationwide to create a positive climate for learning. Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur before responding. The purpose of schoolwide PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm.
Student behavior is monitored using the positive approach. Teachers award students with an Eagle Eye coupon when they are seen following the school wide SOAR expectations.
The SOAR expectations:
Be Safe
Be On Task
Be Accountable for your actions
Be Respectful
At the end of the week, students are rewarded for their behavior with the “Eagle’s Nest” cart. The students calculate their total of Eagle Eye Coupons that they have earned for the week and “cash” them in for a prize on the cart. The prizes are an assortment of items such as bouncy balls, pencils, stickers, games, coupons for special things, etc.
For each nine weeks, the school has a goal for Eagle Eyes earned. If the students are able to reach our school goal, there is a school wide celebration. Those include but are not limited to, a walking field trip to the Kenwick Center, popcorn and movie, school-wide popsicle party, dance party in the gym.
There are posters around the school that allow students to know the expectations for all common areas; bathroom, hallway, stairway, lunchroom, recess, bus, and classrooms. The teachers teach the students the expectations at the beginning of the year, after long breaks, and at any time they feel a review is necessary. The SOAR expectation chant is recited daily on the morning announcements for all students to say and review.
